Essential Firefox plugins


Firebug integrates with Firefox to put a tonne of development tools at your fingertips. You can edit, add and delete any CSS styles, HTML elements in the browser window without affecting your sources files. It works both on local and remote pages, is very intuitive and takes up no space on the firefox interface when its not in use. All of its functions become available when right click on an element in your page and click inspect element. I have found that it greatly decreases the time taken to make incremental improvements to a website template.

Web Developer Toolbar

The Web Developer extension adds a menu and a toolbar to the browser with various web developer tools. Included are essential functions for designers such as the ability to highlight or disable all of any kind of html on a page, replace images, resize the viewing window and a lot more. This plugin is essential for every serious designer.


YSlow analyzes web pages and suggests ways to improve their performance based on a set of rules for high performance web pages. YSlow is a Firefox add-on integrated with the Firebug web development tool. YSlow grades web page based on one of three predefined ruleset or a user-defined ruleset. It offers suggestions for improving the page's performance, summarizes the page's components, displays statistics about the page, and provides tools for performance analysis, including™ and JSLint.


ColorZilla will give you a reading from any point within your browser window, the colour value is available in several notation and can be copied and pasted into other applications such as photoshop or a code editing tool. Zoom and measuring are also available. You can also save colour values. It can also access the attibutes of DOM values.


FireFTP is an in browser ftp utility which also includes more advanced features such as directory comparison, syncing directories while navigating, SFTP, SSL encryption, integrity checking, drag & drop and file hashing.

Live PageRank

This is a very simple small footprint utility which provides a small indicator of the current pages google page rank without requiring you to have google toolbar installed. The indicator is at the bottom right of the screen and doesn't cause any increase in the size of the firefox interface.
